About the project
SEAQUEST – Seagrass Education for Children towards Awareness Quotient for Environmental Sustainability is an EU-funded educational project dedicated to strengthening seagrass and ocean literacy in primary education.
Seagrass meadows are among the most valuable marine ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, providing habitats for marine species, protecting coastlines and contributing to climate regulation. Despite their importance, seagrasses and their role in healthy marine ecosystems remain relatively unknown and are rarely addressed systematically in primary education.
SEAQUEST aims to change this by bringing seagrass education into the classroom and providing teachers with the knowledge, skills and innovative educational resources needed to introduce these topics to children in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
The project combines research, teacher education, classroom and outdoor learning, digital technologies, interactive learning and environmental awareness activities. Through these approaches, SEAQUEST seeks not only to increase knowledge about seagrass but also to encourage environmental responsibility and inspire a new generation of ocean-literate citizens.
Objectives
The following objectives outline the main goals and direction of the SEAQUEST project.
Increase knowledge and awareness of seagrass ecosystems, their ecological importance, the threats they face and the need for their conservation.
Strengthen ocean and seagrass literacy in primary education, making marine environmental education more accessible to schools and young learners.
Equip primary school teachers with the knowledge, competencies and pedagogical approaches needed to confidently teach seagrass, ocean conservation and environmental sustainability.
Develop innovative educational resources and tools that combine classroom learning, outdoor and experiential activities, and technology-driven learning.
Promote inquiry-based, interdisciplinary and hands-on learning, allowing children to explore the connections between seagrass, biodiversity, climate change, human activity and sustainability.
Encourage environmental stewardship and ocean citizenship, helping children understand their relationship with the marine environment and the actions they can take to protect it.
Bridge identified gaps in seagrass education, using evidence from research with teachers, students, teacher educators and researchers across participating European countries.
